This design first appeared in the 1960s and is known by many names, including “Plaque-Plaque”, “Target”, and “Nsu Bura” in Ghana, meaning “water well” and symbolising the ripple effect of one’s actions. Other names include “Consulaire”, “Gbédjégan” in Togo, a traditional straw king’s hat, “Gbedze”, a sun hat for daily use, and in Nigeria, “Record”, inspired by its circular motif resembling vinyl records.
